Hip Dysplasia
Unfortunately, Irish Setters, along with many other of the larger breeds of dog, can suffer from Hip Dysplasia (abnormal development). This condition is currently accepted to be mainly due to an hereditary genetic condition which can be influenced by other factors including nutrition, trauma and incorrect exercise. The inherited component of the condition is polygenic, in that it is caused by the interaction of many genes.
Since 1984 a BVA/KC scoring scheme for Hip Dysplasia has been in operation. The assessment of x-rays submitted to the scheme are listed on the associated pages, arranged alphabetically, by kind permission of the Kennel Club.
Currently the Breed Mean Score (BMS) for Irish Setters is 15.
